Washington, DC, January 9, 2025 —
Today, on the day of President Jimmy Carter’s memorial service, we at the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) join our fellow citizens at home and abroad to reflect on the profound impact President Carter made on Democracy as a leader, citizen, and tireless advocate for service.
President Carter’s unwavering belief in the power of an enlightened and engaged citizenry remains a beacon of inspiration for all who strive to strengthen democracy and civic health. Following his presidency, he demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to public service through his work with The Carter Center—eradicating disease, promoting peace, and defending human rights worldwide. His efforts exemplified the spirit of active citizenship and the transformative potential of service at every stage of life. NCoC has been particularly proud to partner with the Carter Center on election monitoring to promote nonpartisan electoral norms to restore trust in elections.
President Carter’s legacy calls us to action: to deepen civic knowledge, increase civic health, encourage service, and strengthen the bonds of community. His life reminds us that citizenship is a lifelong endeavor—one that begins with a dedication to the common good.
NCoC joins citizens across the globe in paying tribute to his remarkable life. We recommit ourselves to advancing the values he championed—building civic health, encouraging active citizenship, and fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.
Together, let us honor his memory by living his example.
