Five–month study will examine Hoosiers’ civic involvement By Eric Berman 4/19/2011 Indiana is pursuing a statistical measurement of Hoosiers’ civic involvement. The Civic Health Index project will sift publicly–available data on voter turnout, volunteerism, charitable giving and other measures. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton, director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University, says the project is a first step toward recommending ways to increase voter turnout and create a more knowledgeable and civil society. The National Conference on Citizenship will release its findings in September. The state Republican and Democratic parties are supporting the effort. Indiana is the 16th state to undertake the project.
