The Civic Data Challenge invites participants to turn raw data about civic health into useful applications and visualizations that have direct impact on public decision-making. NCoC, with the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is bringing you an expanded version of last year’s Challenge. NCoC is constantly exploring new avenues of information to improve the civic health of our nation. An exciting way to visually showcase this civic vitality is a new tool we’ve been developing called an “infographic.” NCoC will illustrate this concept and tool during a webinar entitled “Visualizing Civic Health: Maximizing Impact through Infographics” on August 1, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern.
As the recession lingers, Californians have joined a broad national trend by turning inward and cutting back on civic engagement. The 2009 California Civic Health Index report not only showed dramatic cutbacks in civic engagement, but also declines in trust in public institutions, especially state government. Californians regard their state government with greater suspicion than most Americans. Of all respondents, only 22 percent say they had a great deal of confidence in their state government.
