In our inaugural year, ~1@BODYURL[id=136amcurl3]@ issued a call to all S&P 500 companies to participate in a landmark new initiative. We are reissuing our call to find the most community–minded companies in the nation. Launched in 2012, The Civic 50 is a national initiative to survey and rank S&P 500 corporations on how they engage with the communities they serve and institutionalize these practices in their corporate culture. Specifically, The Civic 50 recognizes companies seeking to best use their time, talent, and resources to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business. A snapshot of The Civic 50 from 2012: • Time: Between the 430,000 employees of IBM, which took the top spot in the inaugural list, 3.2 million hours were spent volunteering in 2011. • Talent: More than two–thirds of the top 50 companies say they “frequently” or “always” use the professional skills of their workforce to address social issues and real community challenges. • Resources: The top five companies provided $1.5 billion in grant support to community organizations, 17.5 million volunteer hours (valued at over $375 million) and $150 million in matching donations. The survey was developed by the nation’s definitive experts on civic engagement, the National Conference on Citizenship and Points of Light. Bloomberg News, one of corporate America’s most respected sources of business and financial information, is the media partner. The survey is powered by True Impact. This year’s survey focuses on five dimensions: 1. Civic Commitment—how extensively the company applies it resources to civic improvement 2. Strategic Resource Allocation—how the company strategically directs assets and activates resources from other institutions and individuals to maximize community impact 3. Business Integration—how company’s community engagement activities support its business interests 4. Company Policies—how the company supports community engagement through its institutional policies, systems, and incentives 5. Measurement—how a company measures the social value and business value of its community engagement programs The deadline for~1@BODYURL[id=136amcurl4]@ this year is August 16th.
